The film was a recipient of the fest's Garret Scott Documentary Development Grant in 2017. Ahead of its screening this year in Durham, NC, INDY Week's Brian Howe –– the first skateboarder thus far to review the film –– wrote of Minding the Gap:

"What Liu renders crystal-clear in Minding the Gap is that all his friends—and indeed, many skaters around the world and throughout time—are trying to make up for families and societies that let them down, trying to build adulthood atop childhoods they feel they didn't have."

The very same day Full Frame announced their award-winners, Minding the Gap made its Chicago Premiere to a sold-out crowd at Chicago Media Project's DOC 10 Festival. Minding the Gap earns Special Mention in CPH:DOX Next:Wave competition

Following its international premiere at CPH:DOX in the fest's Next:Wave competition, Minding the Gap earned a Special Mention in the competition for emerging documentary filmmaking talent.

This is the third honor for the film since its world premiere at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the fest's Special Jury Award for Breakthrough Filmmaking. Minding the Gap has since won the One in a Million award at the Sun Valley Film Festival, an accolade that honors exceptional works of independent film and films made with a budget of less than a million dollars.

Minding the Gap earned fantastic reviews following its showing in Copenhagen, DK:

"★★★★★★ This film is nothing less than a watershed – there has never been a more in-depth portrayal of late-adolescent masculinity. “If you can watch only one film this festival, let it be this." - @cphpost

Director Bing Liu recently shared insights on his filmmaking process with Jeff Schmidt at the Salem Film Fest as part of the fest's 'Filmmaker Spotlight' series:

"One thing I’ve been thinking about lately is how our society’s mission of ending violence in the home is at odds with how much we value privacy. I think that’s a thing that the film grapples with, too. I hope that we can start thinking about how these issues are not only emotionally difficult to talk about but can be ethically paradoxical as well."

Liu also spoke with students at Salem High School ahead of the film's screening at Salem Film Fest this past Thursday. View photos here.
